Behind the Craft: Making Custom Goat and Ram Skull Masks for the Stage

As a prop maker, some of the most rewarding projects come from collaboration with other creators. This journey began when a metal band reached out to Chimerical Dragonfly because they needed a premium custom mask set to replace their old stage gear, worn down by years of honorable service.

They were looking for a high-impact goat mask and a fierce ram mask to be worn during intense live performances. Working closely with the artists, we analyzed their specific needs. Because the masks had to be shared among different performers (both male and female), it was essential to design a skull mask face structure that could comfortably fit both smaller and larger faces.

After sketching a few concepts and approving the quote, the dark crafting process began.

From Concept to Reality: Sculpting an Animal Skull Mask

By sharing images and videos throughout the process, the clients followed every step of their custom mask creation, allowing them to request adjustments before moving to the next stage.

Once the main skull mask animal base was sculpted, I decided—on my own initiative—to surprise the band. I made the jaw fully articulated. I knew they secretly wanted an articulated jaw but had mentioned it was beyond their budget. I truly enjoy working with passionate artists, and whenever I can add a little extra magic to a stage prop, I do!

he Legend of the Goat Horns

For the goat mask, I had a stroke of luck during a trip to Portugal. Up on a mountain, I met a local shepherd selling real horns from his goats (which had died of old age). I found the perfect pair at the exact right time. They were twisted, imperfect, and beautifully worn. They instantly captivated the clients, so we decided to create a mold of them for future skull mask designs.

Crafting the Ram Horns

When it came to the ram mask, the process required a different approach. I hand-sculpted the massive horns using Plastazote, carefully replicating their deep ridges, organic curves, and weathered details. After making a professional mold, the skull and the horns were finally joined, creating a terrifyingly realistic demon mask aesthetic perfect for a dark music video or an elite skull mask halloween outfit.

The Art of Aging: A Dozen Layers of Death

When it came to the painting stage, I wanted to avoid the quick, cheap route—like painting everything black and just dry-brushing the surface. Instead, I envisioned a heavily worn, aged bone color that looked ancient and decayed.

  • The Base: I started from a clean ivory tone.
  • The Process: I worked with intricate washes, applying about a dozen layers of different tones to build depth.
  • The Result: A naturally aged, stained effect that makes each skull mask half and full-face piece impossible to replicate exactly. No matter how closely I repeat the steps, the colors will never form the same marks twice.

Mission accomplished? Unfortunately, life had other plans. Due to unexpected personal reasons, the band had to step away from the final purchase.

While it was heartbreaking, it means these two incredible stage props—with their rich backstory, articulated jaws, and meticulous Italian craftsmanship—are now officially available for sale in my online shop.

Whether you are looking for a definitive skull mask animal piece for your band, a high-end demon mask for a performance, or an unforgettable skull mask halloween collector's item, these masks are ready to find their true home.
